How to treble crochet (triple crochet)
The treble crochet (tr), also known as the triple crochet, is a tall stitch that builds up quickly. This stitch is popular for blankets, shawls, or any large pieces where tight stitches isn’t needed.
If you know how to single and double crochet, a treble crochet will be no problem since this stitch is just one extra yarn over compared to a double crochet.
To create a treble crochet, start with either a foundation chain, or a row of stitches, of any length. Note that the turning chain length for a treble crochet is four chains.
Yarn over twice, then insert your hook into the fifth chain from your hook or the next stitch. Yarn over and pull the loop through the chain or stitch. You will have three loops on your hook. Yarn over again, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over once more, pull through two loops. You now have a treble crochet!
To recap, single crochets involve one “yarn over, pull through two loops”, for double crochets you do it twice, and for treble crochets you will do it three times.
If you would like to create even taller stitches, start by yarning over as many times as you’d like, and repeat the yarn over, pull through two loops step until you end up with one loop on your hook. You can make stitches of any height just by modifying the number of loops you start with on your hook.
